Each day I have a choice to either be a thermometer or be a thermostat.
While being a thermometer I am inherently made to react to my external environment. I gauge the “temperature” of the situation and reply. Just reply. Without control or purpose I simply respond to whatever someone is saying, or whatever new experience I encounter. I am beholden to whatever an outside authority pushes me to explore. The choice is not mine.
While being a thermostat I decide to control the “temperature” of the room. I get to set the agenda, and choose what, who and to whom I respond to. I take command of the situations of my life and decide what is important and what is not important. I am allowed to set that tone of discernment. As a thermostat I take control of my decisions and ergo my actions. I get to feel what I want and when I want to.
All too often we are forced to behave like a thermometer. To simply react. To reach our boiling point or to crack under the pressure. Yet we have the gifts of becoming thermostats and controlling our destiny, choose to feel and engage in the experience. Being the latter allows the opportunities to lead and become more authentic to who we are. Thermostats have the ability to make an impact in a room, and so do we in our lives.
React and survive, or take set the temperature and thrive.
Each morning when I get up I have that choice to be either a thermostat or a thermometer. You have that choice too.
